Lantern Slides (40 of 65)
Lantern slides were created ten years after the invention of photography, and they allowed photographs to be viewed in an entirely new format. A photograph could now be seen by a larger audience. In this collection, there is a wooden box filled with lantern slides from the Great War (images of them are below). The entities that cooperated to build the United War Work Campaign (YMCA, National Catholic War Council, Jewish Welfare Board, Salvation Army, War Camp Community Service, American Library Association and the YWCA) also worked together to provide support of all kinds for soldiers, sailors and marines – both in training camps and overseas. All of these various groups are represented in the lantern slides.
